Why Your Hair Growth Seems Stuck: Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle
Have you ever felt like your hair simply stopped growing?
You trim it. You care for it. You wait months—and somehow, it looks like you're still at the same length.
Before assuming your hair isn't growing, there's something important to understand: hair growth is a cycle.
Your Hair Doesn't Grow All at Once
Every hair follicle moves through different phases of growth, transition, rest, and shedding. At any given time, different follicles on your scalp can be in different stages of this cycle.
1. Anagen — The Growth Phase
This is the active growth phase. The follicle is producing a hair fiber, and the strand continues to grow.
The length of this phase varies from person to person, which is one reason some people can grow very long hair while others struggle to reach the same lengths.
2. Catagen — The Transition Phase
During this short transitional period, the follicle begins to slow down its activity and prepares to enter the resting stage.
3. Telogen — The Resting Phase
The follicle takes a break from active growth. The existing hair remains in place while the follicle prepares for its next cycle.
4. Exogen — The Shedding Phase
The older hair eventually sheds, making room for a new hair to begin its growth cycle.
So Why Does Your Hair Seem "Stuck"?
Sometimes the issue isn't that your hair has stopped growing.
It may be that you're not retaining the growth you're producing.
Your hair can grow from the follicle while the ends are simultaneously breaking, leaving you with little or no visible increase in length.
Other factors can also affect how your hair behaves, including genetics, age, hormonal changes, nutritional status, health conditions, and the condition of your scalp and hair follicles.
That's why simply adding another growth oil or product may not solve the problem.
